Project: Youth Initiative

This summer, Project: VISION's mission was to put the "learning" back into service learning. Most of Chicago's public school students are required to complete service learning hours in order to graduate high school, and some elementary schools even require this of their 8th grade graduates. However, all too often, students see this as yet another requirement, another chore to complete before receiving their hard-earned diplomas and kids end up scrounging for any type of volunteer hours to fulfill the assignment, thus defeating the purpose of service learning.

Project: VISION wanted to change this perception of service learning this summer through our new program, Project: Youth Initiative. We believe that by first teaching kids about the social issues that our communities face, they will be more likely to truly engage in the service projects because of the sense of purpose they gain from knowledge.

Ultimately, our goal is to motivate youth to continue to engage in community service long after school requirements are met and that they continue to volunteer because they want to make a difference.

Over the last 12 weeks, over 15 youth participated in a seriries of six workshops and service projects addressing a wide variety of social issues including hunger and homelessness, the environment, and public health.

Workshops helped the students learn about each of these issues through presentations, videos, and engaging students in interactive group activies and lively discussions led by guest speakers.
